USS Nimitz The Final Countdown

The Final Countdown is one of my favourite movies from the ‘80’s. The plot is an American alternate-history science-fiction war film about a modern nuclear-powered super-aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz, that travels through time to the day before the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. When the ship time travels in this film, they enter a storm that turns into a swirling time altering vortex. Typically when I paint my Nauticus series, I have a colour pallet in mind, but usually let the brush strokes dictate how the seascapes come together. In this case, I couldn’t get over the uncanny vortex-like energy happening on my canvas, and immediately knew I had to draw the USS Nimitz transitioning through time.
USS Nimitz The Final Countdown is a 16x20" acrylic and ink painting on a 1" thick canvas, and does not come framed. --
Nautical art has been a long established motif which for many was used to convey the beauty of their surroundings or the dramatic hardships of a sailor’s life. In my current series, I'm attempting to evoke the romantic gesture of transition, a theme found commonly thread through so many nautical compositions, almost creating a dreamlike state. To help accentuate this abstract upheaval often felt during transit, I've taken inspiration from J. M.W. Turner to develop my gestural painting style, while grounding the seascapes, by adding detailed illustrations of ships from both historical and fictional seafaring tales.
