While the Orca is hardly the lead superstar in this 70’s American thriller classic film, losing out to one very renowned man-eating great white shark, it is nevertheless one of Hollywood’s most beloved ships. In this painting I thought I’d play on the design of the original Jaws movie poster, with very specific tweaks. First I replaced the oblivious swimmer with Quint’s boat, the Orca, and then I dramatically increased the size of the shark (comparatively to the boat), heightening the grandeur and myth of this beast. While the shark famously attacks the Orca from behind in the movie, I thought this overdramatized rendition of the shark rising from the depths below, as he does in the movie poster, would make a much better pop culture revamp than an attempt at the shark taking a bite out of the Orca. I also waited until I had a large enough canvas to do this painting justice and provide it with some cinematic grandeur.
Jaws is a 24x48" acrylic and ink painting on a 2" thick canvas, and does not come framed.

Nautical art has been a long established motif which for many was used to convey the beauty of their surroundings or the dramatic hardships of a sailor’s life. In my current series, I'm attempting to evoke the romantic gesture of transition, a theme found commonly thread through so many nautical compositions, almost creating a dreamlike state. To help accentuate this abstract upheaval often felt during transit, I've taken inspiration from J. M.W. Turner to develop my gestural painting style, while grounding the seascapes, by adding detailed illustrations of ships from both historical and fictional seafaring tales.
