The Iron Fleet

If like me, you found yourself entranced by the HBO adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s ‘Game of Thrones’ saga (until the let down of the final season, but I digress), then you may have also been as impressed by some of the seafaring fleets as I was. I especially enjoyed the name The Iron Fleet, and have kept this nautical imagery in the back of my mind until I created the right painting for it. Low and behold, 2020 did turn out something worthwhile, as I found the blending of dark burnt reds and purples an excellent backdrop for this formidable naval armada.
The Iron Fleet is a 12x24" acrylic and ink painting on a 1" thick canvas, and does not come framed.

Nautical art has been a long established motif which for many was used to convey the beauty of their surroundings or the dramatic hardships of a sailor’s life. In my current series, I'm attempting to evoke the romantic gesture of transition, a theme found commonly thread through so many nautical compositions, almost creating a dreamlike state. To help accentuate this abstract upheaval often felt during transit, I've taken inspiration from J. M.W. Turner to develop my gestural painting style, while grounding the seascapes, by adding detailed illustrations of ships from both historical and fictional seafaring tales.
